Chapter 9

The Mill Town Gym

551 words•~3 min read•2026-10-13

The address led to a boxing gym in a dying mill town eighty miles from Fort Liberty.

Emma found Jake sitting alone in the darkened ring. Without the uniform, the crowd, and the title of champion, he looked older. One eye was swollen from Briggs's strike. His hands rested open on his knees.

"You came without military police," he said.

"They are five minutes behind me."

"Still honest."

"You sound disappointed."

Jake looked at faded photographs along the wall. One showed him at seventeen, thin and uncertain beside a local coach. "I trained here because my father said fighting was the only thing I did well. When I joined the Army, winning finally made people listen."

"Then you learned to make everyone else afraid to speak."

He accepted the words without argument.

Collins first approached him after his tournament victory. He offered better assignments and money from exhibitions. Jake believed the Pit rewarded toughness. By the time he understood the betting system, he had accepted cash, threatened witnesses, and built his reputation on matches Collins controlled.

"Ruiz was supposed to lose after ninety seconds," Jake said. "The money was on him lasting two minutes. When he tapped early, Collins told me to keep it going."

"And you did."

"Yes."

"Owen's mother?"

"Collins had access to the benefit review. I used it because I knew it would work."

Emma felt no satisfaction in his confession. Only the exhaustion of seeing how easily a person could turn his own wounds into weapons against someone weaker.

Jake climbed out of the ring and opened a floor panel beneath the corner stool. Inside was a hardened drive sealed in plastic.

"Every match. Every payment. Messages from Collins and Rusk. Briggs gave me access because he thought I wanted insurance."

"Why keep it?"

"At first, so they could never throw me away. Later, because I knew someday I would have to decide whether I was the man on those recordings."

"You are."

He looked at her.

"But you do not have to remain him," Emma added.

Sirens approached outside.

Jake handed her the drive. "Collins scheduled another match during the tournament. Owen against Pike. They will call it an exhibition. Rusk's customers already placed bets."

"Collins is restricted to quarters."

"His phone is not. He wants the event to happen so he can claim the Pit was legitimate training all along. If Owen refuses, the forged gambling charges go public."

Military police entered with weapons lowered but ready.

Jake raised his hands.

Before they took him, he looked at Emma once more. "In the gym, I thought you were trying to embarrass me."

"I was trying to stop you from breaking your arm."

"I know that now."

The drive transformed the case. Investigators found four years of videos and records. Collins had taken a share of every bet. Rusk laundered the money through sports bars and false equipment invoices. Senior officers received payments to ignore injury reports.

But someone had accessed the files hours before Jake surrendered them. A deletion command was scheduled to wipe the drive remotely at noon on tournament day.

Malik's forensic team interrupted it with seven minutes remaining.

The command originated inside the combat gym.

The tournament was no longer merely an event.

It was the last active part of the conspiracy.
