Finding Nolan Briggs
Search teams found Nolan Briggs before noon.
He was alive beneath an abandoned hunting shelter, weak from blood loss and exposure. A bullet had passed through his upper arm. Emma's phone lay wrapped inside his jacket.
At the hospital, Briggs asked to speak with Emma before surgery.
"I started the Pit," he admitted.
Years earlier, he organized informal matches to raise money for a soldier's injured child. The first event was controlled, voluntary, and private. Major Collins learned about it and saw something else: a system of favors, use, and cash that official oversight could not see.
"He brought in Rusk," Briggs said. "Then the bets got bigger. Jake became the face of it. I kept telling myself I was protecting the program by staying close."
"You watched Ruiz tap."
His eyes filled. "Collins had my retirement packet and evidence of the first illegal matches. He said if I stopped the bout, every soldier who ever participated would be charged."
"So you chose Daniel."
"Yes."
Emma did not comfort him.
Briggs told her the burner phone contained videos, payment records, and messages from Collins. At the field house, he tried to frighten her away so he could recover it first. Someone else reached the locker after him and stole the device.
"Rusk has it now," he said. "But the phone backs up whenever it connects to the gym's private network. The server is hidden above the old ventilation room."
"Why take my phone during the raid?"
"I saw Collins leave. I knew he would erase everything and blame you. Your recording was the only copy I could save."
"Who shot you?"
"Jake followed me from the gym."
The words struck Emma harder than she expected.
Briggs gripped her wrist. "He raised the gun, but Collins fired it. Jake tried to stop him. That is why I got away."
Jake had not protected Emma or Owen. He had protected Briggs at the final moment. It did not erase anything, but it complicated the shape of his guilt.
Emma recovered her phone. The last video showed Collins ordering soldiers to seize evidence while Rusk closed the betting system. It also captured Jake shouting at Collins to stop after the gun was mentioned.
The server remained the missing piece.
Headquarters appointed Colonel Miriam Shaw to replace Collins as acting commander. Shaw came from outside the brigade and brought federal investigators with her. Collins was restricted to quarters, but his attorney argued that the videos lacked proof of financial crimes.

When investigators entered the ventilation room, they found an empty server rack.
Someone had removed it less than an hour earlier.
Emma returned to the hospital that evening. Briggs was out of surgery. His wife sat beside him with both hands wrapped around his.
"There was a backup," Briggs whispered. "Jake made one. He said nobody should own the only copy of a man's worst decision."
"Where?"
"He never told me."
Emma called Jake. His number had been disconnected.
Military police searched his room and found drawers open, uniforms gone, and a tournament medal left on the bed.
Beneath it was a note addressed to Emma.
YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT THE TAP. I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED YEARS AGO.
Below the sentence, Jake had written an address across the state line.
