Chapter 10

The Uncancelled Tournament

505 words•~3 min read•2026-10-13

Colonel Shaw refused to cancel the tournament.

"If we close the doors, the person controlling that terminal disappears," she said. "We hold the event, control the network, and watch who reaches for the switch."

Emma returned to the gym under written authority as safety supervisor. Captain Morgan, restored to command, took responsibility for every match. Federal agents dressed as staff and spectators. Malik monitored the private network from a room below the bleachers.

Owen still appeared on the exhibition schedule.

"Remove him," Emma told Morgan.

"He asked to stay."

Owen entered the office wearing warm-up gear. "If my name disappears, they will know we found the plan."

"You are not bait," Emma said.

"I was bait when I had no choice. Today I have one."

Emma recognized the difference, but it did not make the decision easier. They agreed that Owen would walk to the cage and stop before contact. Agents would watch every exit.

The tournament began beneath bright lights and unit banners. Families filled the bleachers. The official announcer praised discipline, courage, and controlled aggression. Few spectators knew that the building contained more investigators than instructors.

Jake arrived in handcuffs through a service entrance. Prosecutors had authorized his presence to identify the network terminal and participants. He wore a plain uniform without Staff Sergeant rank.

When Owen saw him, fear moved across his face.

Jake stopped several feet away. "I am not here to ask forgiveness."

"Good," Owen said. "I don't have it."

"You shouldn't."

At 1400, the announcer called Owen and Pike for the resilience exhibition.

They approached the cage. Pike glanced toward the upper viewing office. Emma followed his gaze and saw Calvin Rusk standing behind the tinted glass wearing a volunteer badge.

Agents moved toward the stairs.

The building's fire alarm activated.

Spectators rose in confusion. Exit signs went dark. The cage door locked electronically with Owen and Pike inside. Rusk had turned evacuation into cover.

Pike backed away. "This isn't part of it."

A voice came through the overhead speaker.

Major Collins.

"The match ends when one fighter cannot continue."

Owen looked toward Emma.

"Do not engage," she ordered.

The cage lights flashed. A prerecorded video appeared on the arena screens, showing edited clips that made Owen seem to accept money from Rusk. Collins's voice promised to release the full file unless the match continued.

Pike lowered his hands. "I'm done hurting kids for them."

The crowd could hear him through the cage microphone.

"Then tap out," Owen said.

Pike placed one palm flat against the mat.

The official signal ended the match before it began.

Applause spread through the bleachers, uncertain at first, then louder.

In the viewing office, Rusk smashed the control terminal and ran. Agents followed him into the service corridor.

Jake looked at Emma. "There is a second control station beneath the old ventilation room. Collins will be there."

They reached the room as smoke began pouring through the lower hallway.

Collins had decided to burn the server, the building, and everyone still inside it.
