Chapter 11

Real Alarms

583 words•~3 min read•2026-10-13

The evacuation alarm became real.

Families moved toward the exits while instructors forced open electronically locked doors. Smoke crawled along the ceiling. Malik reported that the fire had started below the ventilation room and was moving toward the electrical system.

Emma, Morgan, and two agents reached the lower corridor. Jake followed despite the guard ordered to keep him upstairs.

"You are in custody," Morgan said.

"I know the access code."

The first door opened with Jake's print. Behind it, Collins stood beside a burning waste bin and a server rack soaked in accelerant. He held a pistol in one hand and the stolen burner phone in the other.

"You built all this over people hitting each other for entertainment," Emma said.

"I built loyalty," Collins replied. "Every person who took money became invested in protecting the unit."

"You mean protecting you."

Collins pointed the weapon at Jake. "You were nothing before I made you champion."

Jake's old anger rose, but this time he did not let it choose for him.

"You made me useful," he said. "She showed me the difference."

Collins fired.

Jake pulled Emma aside. The round struck a pipe, bursting steam across the corridor. Agents returned fire into the wall above Collins, forcing him behind the server rack. Morgan dragged the burning bin away from the fuel.

Smoke thickened. Emma moved through the steam and reached Collins as he tried to escape through the rear door. He swung the pistol toward her.

She trapped his wrist with both hands.

They crashed against the server rack. Collins was heavier and desperate. He drove Emma toward the flames, using rank no longer, only force. Her injured knee buckled.

For one instant she was back on the training mat with Jake walking her down and a room waiting for her to fail.

Stillness was not weakness.

Emma shifted her weight, redirected Collins's arm, and turned beneath his center. The same movement that had thrown Jake carried Collins across her hip. He struck the floor. The pistol slid beneath a cabinet.

Emma controlled his arm.

"Tap," she said.

Collins laughed through the smoke. "You think this is training?"

"No. That is why I am giving you a choice."

She applied only enough pressure to prevent him from reaching the weapon.

He refused.

Jake stepped into view. "I made that mistake."

Collins stared at the man who had enforced his power for years.

"Tap," Jake said. "Before your pride decides what is left of your life."

Collins struck the floor with his free hand.

Once.

Emma released the pressure but maintained control until agents secured him.

From the moment Collins raised the pistol to the moment he surrendered, thirty seconds had passed.

Fire crews extinguished the lower-room blaze before it reached the main gym. Rusk was arrested outside after attempting to hide among evacuated families. The burner phone survived inside Collins's jacket.

At the ambulance, a medic examined Emma's knee. Jake sat nearby in restraints.

"You could have let him destroy his arm," Jake said.

"That would not have made me stronger."

He nodded toward the crowded parking lot. Owen stood with Daniel Ruiz's father, both safe.

"What happens to me now?"

"You answer for what you did."

"And after that?"

"That depends on whether you think consequence is the end of a person or the beginning of an honest one."

Military police led him away.

This time, nobody cheered for the defeated fighter.

They cheered because the match had finally stopped when someone tapped.
