Chapter 7

The Dead Man Who Called Me Daughter

606 words•~3 min read•2026-10-12

The happiest lies are often the ones people tell you at funerals.

My father's funeral had been rain, folded flags, and my mother clutching a photograph with hands that would not stop shaking.

They told us his aircraft had crashed during a classified training mission.

They told us no remains had been recovered.

They told us he had died in service to his country.

For six years, I believed grief eventually reached an ending.

It doesn't.

Sometimes grief has a door.

And that file had just opened mine.

Colonel Vance cleared the conference room except for Hayes and me.

Briggs started to stand as well.

I stopped him.

"He stays."

Hayes looked surprised.

Briggs looked even more surprised.

I didn't look at either man.

"He found the drive."

Vance considered that for a moment.

Then nodded.

My father's file opened on the screen in pieces.

He had discovered Black Meridian while reviewing weapons transfers. Instead of passing the evidence through standard reporting channels, he concealed it.

Then he disappeared before the network could kill him.

The funeral had been staged.

Our grief had not.

I couldn't breathe properly.

Hayes spoke quietly.

"Avery…"I stepped away from the table.

"No."

My own voice sounded unfamiliar.

"No. Don't say my name like that."

Like pity.

Like I was about to fall apart.

I wasn't falling apart.

I was becoming sharper.

"Where is he?"

Vance looked at the last page.

"Off-grid safe location. Outer Banks. Decommissioned Coast Guard facility."

Briggs frowned.

"That's only a few hours away."

Hayes answered immediately.

"Could be a trap."

"Everything is a trap," I said.

Vance looked straight at me.

"You are injured."

"My father is alive."

"That doesn't make you bulletproof."

"No. It makes me motivated."

By evening, we were traveling in an unmarked convoy.

Hayes drove.

Vance sat beside him.

Briggs and I rode in the back.

No official escort.

No radio traffic.No digital trail.

Briggs sat stiffly with both hands resting on his knees.

After an hour, he spoke.

"Mitchell."

I kept looking through the window.

"What?"

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

"Good."

He nodded.

"But whatever it's worth, I'm with you until this is finished."

I finally looked at him.

The person beside me did not feel like the same man I had fought in the ring.

Or perhaps he was the same man.

Just cracked open enough for something different to show.

"We'll see," I said.

Close to midnight, we arrived at the abandoned station.

It stood against the dark ocean like a ghost.

Peeling white paint.

Broken fencing.

One light glowing from an upper window.

Too easy.

Far too quiet.

Hayes lowered his voice.

"Nobody moves until I clear—"

The front door opened.

An older man stepped outside.Gray beard.

A limp in his left leg.

Eyes I had known my entire childhood.

Every rule my body had ever learned disappeared.

"Dad?"

Admiral Thomas Mitchell stood beneath the porch light.

His expression broke apart.

"Avery."

I ran.

The pain vanished.

Training vanished.

Six years vanished.

He caught me in his arms.

For the first time since I was twenty-one years old, I heard my father breathing against me.

He smelled of ocean salt and old wool.

"I'm sorry," he whispered against my hair. "I am so sorry."

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to hold him forever.

I wanted to become six years old again and scream because he had missed every birthday.

Instead I whispered:

"You let us bury an empty coffin."

His arms tightened around me.

"To keep you alive."

Then a red dot appeared on his chest.

Hayes shouted.

"DOWN!"

The porch light exploded.
