Chapter 1

The Challenge on the Mat

817 words•~5 min read•2026-10-13

"You're actually going to fight me?"

Staff Sergeant Jake Turner's laugh carried through the combat gym louder than the gloves striking the heavy bags.

Sergeant Emma Carter stood barefoot beside the mat, tightening the tape around her right wrist. She wore a plain Army training shirt and regulation shorts. No badges, no ribbons, nothing that explained why she had walked into Fort Liberty's hardest close-combat session and written her name beneath Jake's on the sparring board.

Training sounds faded unevenly. A heavy bag swung after its last punch. A jump rope slapped the rubber floor twice before stopping. Soldiers turned from the cage wall and weight benches until nearly half the gym was watching.

Jake stood in the center of the mat, broad-shouldered and loose, enjoying their attention. He had won the installation combatives tournament two years in a row. Young soldiers copied his stance. Senior NCOs praised his aggression. Around the gym, his reputation had hardened into something few people questioned.

Someone near the benches called, "She won't make it thirty seconds."

Laughter rolled through the room.

Emma did not blink.

Jake walked toward her until his shadow crossed her face. "Go back to the office before you embarrass yourself."

"Do you always talk this much before training?" Emma asked.

The laughter weakened. One corner of Jake's grin tightened.

"Training?" he said. "That's what you think this is?"

Emma stepped onto the mat.

Soldiers formed a loose circle. Several reached for their phones until Sergeant First Class Nolan Briggs, the session supervisor, barked at them to put the devices away. Briggs wore a whistle on his chest and unease behind his eyes.

"Controlled contact," he said. "A tap or verbal stop ends the sequence. No unnecessary shots. Understood?"

Jake nodded without looking away from Emma.

Briggs turned to her. "You good, Carter?"

It sounded less like concern than doubt.

"I'm good."

Near the back, Private Owen Hale leaned toward another soldier. "Who is she?"

"Some sergeant from admin."

"Admin? Against Turner?"

Jake heard them and smiled. Emma heard them too. She had entered rooms like this before, rooms where people decided what they were seeing before they bothered to look. They confused silence with fear and confidence with competence.

Jake lifted his guard. "Last chance. Nobody will think less of you if you walk away."

"Is that what you tell everybody?"

For half a second, his smile vanished.

Briggs raised one hand. "Begin."

Jake moved quickly, snapping a testing jab toward Emma's face. She shifted her head just far enough for the glove to pass. He followed with a cross and a low feint, using his shoulder to crowd her backward.

"There it is," someone said. "Turner's walking her down."

Emma gave ground. Jake attacked again. To the watching soldiers, retreat looked like defeat. They did not notice that she never crossed her feet, never lost balance, and never allowed him to choose the angle he wanted.

Ten seconds.

Jake drove a combination toward her guard. Emma absorbed the first glove on her forearm, slipped the second, and circled away. His expression changed. He had expected panic. Instead, he found patience.

"Stand still," he muttered.

"That would make this easier for you."

A few soldiers laughed, this time at him.

Jake's next strike carried more force than the rules allowed. Emma leaned outside it and felt air move across her cheek. Briggs saw it but did not blow the whistle.

Twenty seconds.

Jake pressed harder. He wanted a dramatic finish before the promised thirty seconds expired. He stepped deep with his right foot and threw a looping hook meant to drive Emma toward the edge.

She had been waiting for that step.

Emma closed the distance instead of retreating. Her left hand redirected his arm. Her shoulder moved beneath his center of gravity. One foot blocked his base while her hips turned.

Jake left the floor.

The entire gym inhaled at once.

He struck the mat flat on his back, more shocked than hurt. Before he could roll, Emma controlled his wrist, folded his arm safely against her chest, and settled beside his shoulder. The position was decisive. One careful extension would end the exchange.

Twenty-seven seconds.

"Tap," Briggs ordered.

Jake stared at the ceiling. Then at the soldiers surrounding him.

He could not make himself do it.

"Turner," Briggs said again. "Tap."

Emma felt Jake's muscles tighten. Not in surrender. In rage.

He twisted against the joint and swung his free fist toward the side of her head.

Emma released the lock before his own movement could injure him. She rolled beneath the illegal strike, rose to one knee, and guided his momentum past her. Jake lurched forward and stopped on both hands.

The wall clock clicked to thirty seconds.

No one laughed.

Emma stood and offered him her hand.

Jake looked at it as if it were another humiliation.
