Chapter 2

The Four-Star Suburban

745 words•~4 min read•2026-10-13

General Evelyn Vance stepped out of the Suburban and surveyed the checkpoint without speaking.

She was smaller than Maya expected. Photographs made the Army Chief of Staff seem carved to a monumental scale, but in person her authority came from stillness. She took in the blocked lane, the Mercedes, Jackson's unfinished reach toward Maya, and the cap in the dirt. Her gaze paused on the swelling handprint across Maya's cheek.

Sergeant First Class Marcus Brody closed the vehicle door behind her.

Jackson and Miller saluted at once. Maya followed, ignoring the pull of bruised skin when her fingers touched the edge of her brow.

Vance returned the salute. "Carry on."

Nobody moved.

Victoria recovered first. "General, thank God. This soldier has created an outrageous delay. I'm Victoria Sterling. Colonel Sterling's wife."

Vance bent, picked up Maya's cap, and brushed dust from the brim with two passes of her hand. She held it out.

"Your cover, Specialist."

Maya accepted it. "Thank you, General."

"Put it on. You are still at your post."

Once the cap was straight, Vance looked at her name tape. "Specialist Lin, did you receive written access instructions for this gate?"

"Yes, General."

"What do they say about civilian vehicles?"

"They are prohibited until base command lifts the lockdown."

"Did anyone with lawful authority amend that instruction?"

"No, General."

Vance turned to the MPs. "Did either of you receive an order to detain Specialist Lin?"

Jackson's throat worked. "No, General."

"Then why was your hand on her?"

"Mrs. Sterling told us to remove her."

Victoria gave a short laugh. "I told them to deal with an insubordinate soldier. Surely we do not need to turn this into an interrogation."

Vance finally faced her. "A civilian cannot issue an order to military police."

"I know that. Obviously. I was speaking on behalf of my husband."

"Did Colonel Sterling direct you to order an arrest?"

The question landed cleanly. Victoria glanced toward the people watching by the hangar, then adjusted her scarf. "He expects personnel to treat me with basic respect."

"That was not my question."

Victoria's certainty began to thin. "This girl struck my vehicle and became aggressive."

Maya felt the accusation like a second blow. She opened her mouth, but Vance raised one hand without looking away from Victoria.

"No one is going to argue this case at the roadside," the general said. "We will preserve evidence, identify witnesses, and take statements."

Brody moved at the words, photographing the positions of both vehicles and the barricade with a government phone. Miller looked down at the red light on his body camera as though he had only just remembered it.

Vance noticed. "Was that camera active during the encounter?"

"Yes, General. It should have been."

"Do not review, stop, or transmit the recording. The provost marshal will secure it."

"Yes, General."

Victoria lifted her chin. "You are taking their word over mine?"

"I am taking no one's word over anyone else's. I am preventing rank, marriage, and embarrassment from deciding what the evidence says."

Maya saw Brody glance at Vance. The line sounded less like a rebuke prepared for Victoria than a rule the general had used many times before.

Vance addressed Maya. "Do you require medical attention?"

The instinctive answer rose to Maya's lips: No, General. She had been trained to minimize discomfort, finish the shift, avoid becoming the problem everyone had to solve. Then she tasted blood again.

"I should be evaluated," she said.

"Correct." Vance looked at Jackson. "Call the clinic and the provost marshal. State that there has been an alleged assault at a restricted checkpoint. Use those words. Do not soften them."

Jackson hurried toward the shack.

Victoria stepped nearer to Vance and lowered her voice. "General, may I speak to you privately? Richard is under consideration for a star. A spectacle here could damage years of service."

Vance regarded her for a long moment. "Specialist Lin has a career too. How much of it were you prepared to damage?"

Victoria looked away.

The general checked her watch. "Sergeant Brody, notify Colonel Sterling. His presence is required at Gate Seven in ten minutes. Tell him this is not a social request."

Brody keyed his radio.

"And Sergeant?" Vance added.

"Ma'am?"

"Ask the Inspector General's office to send an investigator."

For the first time, Victoria appeared frightened rather than offended.

Maya understood why. An angry general might be managed with apologies and a closed door. An inspector general created records.
