Smoke in the Administration Wing
The administration building emptied through two exits while gray smoke pressed against the windows. Soldiers coughed in the parking lot. Fire crews forced open a side door and disappeared inside wearing respirators.
The alarm reported a chemical spill. The smell told a different story.
"Thermite," Agent Shaw said. "Someone wants metal cabinets melted, not people evacuated."
The evidence room was on the second floor.
Our master drive remained in Ortiz's hand, but Mrs. Brooks's phone, the sworn statements, and the copied rosters had been logged upstairs. If they burned, the conspiracy could attack the authenticity of everything left.
Shaw caught my arm as I moved toward the building.
"Absolutely not."
"There are people inside."
"Fire team has them."
A face appeared behind a second-floor window.
Noah.
He struck the glass with both palms. Smoke swallowed him, then cleared. The window would not open.
"How did he get in there?" I shouted.
Cole's face went white. "He was sent to sign his statement."
The stairwell doors had locked automatically when the alarm triggered. Someone had altered the emergency-control system.
I stopped listening to Shaw.
Cole and I ran around the building to the maintenance entrance. He knew an exterior ladder led to the archive roof. Rain had made the metal slick. Smoke crawled under the eaves as we climbed.
"You should go back," I told him.
"I already went back once," he said. "In the dining hall."
We broke a roof-access panel with a pry bar and entered the upper corridor. Heat slammed into us. The emergency lights blinked through a brown haze. Somewhere behind the walls, thermite burned with a white fury that water could not stop.
We found Noah on the floor outside the evidence room. He had wrapped his uniform blouse across his mouth and was trying to drag an unconscious clerk toward the window.
Cole lifted the clerk. I took Noah by the shoulders.
"Can you walk?"
"The phone," he coughed. "Mrs. Brooks's phone is inside."
"Leave it."
"But the proof—"
"You are not less important than the proof."
The words stopped him.
We moved toward the roof hatch. A figure emerged through the smoke behind us wearing a respirator and carrying a red fuel can. He swung a metal bar at Cole. Cole turned just in time; the blow struck his shoulder and sent him against the wall.
I pushed Noah toward the ladder and faced the attacker.

He came at me again. I avoided the first swing but not the second. The bar caught my ribs and drove the air from my lungs. Before he could raise it again, Cole tackled him from the side. They crashed through the door of a supply room.
The attacker's respirator came loose.
Master Sergeant Paul Danner, Harker's senior operations NCO, stared back at us.
Danner had spent twelve days greeting me as an unassigned nobody. He had also controlled duty rosters, building access, and punishment details.
"You don't know what you're destroying," he said.
"Forty-one families might disagree," I answered.
He reached inside his jacket.
Noah shouted a warning.
Cole struck Danner's wrist before he could draw the pistol. The weapon slid across the floor. I kicked it beneath a cabinet, and together we forced Danner down until firefighters reached us.
Outside, medics treated Cole's fractured shoulder and Noah's smoke inhalation. The clerk regained consciousness in the ambulance. No one died.
The evidence room did not survive.
Mrs. Brooks arrived while flames still rose from the roof. When she heard about her phone, she looked sad for only a moment.
"It backed up to my grandson's cloud account," she said. "He complains because I never delete anything."
Shaw laughed for the first time in two days.
Danner refused to speak until agents showed him the LANTERN files. Then he asked for a deal. He admitted planting Lucas Bell's badge in Noah's room, staging Vance's abduction with two civilian contractors, and setting the fire on Crowe's instruction.
"Who ordered Vance killed?" Shaw asked.
"Crowe said scare him. The contractor decided witnesses were cleaner when they stopped breathing."
"And Vale?"
Danner looked toward me. "Vale doesn't give orders. He gives people the answer he wants them to reach."
My secure phone rang before dawn. General Vale's aide informed me that I had been suspended for disobeying a direct order and compromising an active investigation. A team from headquarters was on its way to seize our evidence.
Ortiz muted the call.
"If they take the drive under Vale's authority, it disappears."
"Then we ensure it exists in more than one place."
We created verified forensic images and sent them simultaneously to Army Criminal Investigation headquarters, the Department of Defense Inspector General, and a federal prosecutor already cleared by Agent Shaw. Each transfer generated an independent receipt.
By the time Vale's team reached the gate, the truth no longer fit inside one cabinet they could burn.

But Vale had one weapon left.
He could make me the story instead of the evidence.
By noon, a leaked report appeared across military news sites. It claimed I had provoked Harker, concealed exculpatory evidence, endangered junior soldiers, and launched the operation to settle a personal grievance from an earlier command.
The article included details from my sealed personnel file.
At the end, an anonymous senior official described me as "unstable, ambitious, and emotionally compromised."
Noah read the article from his hospital bed.
"They're going to get away with it," he said.
I wanted to promise him they would not.
Instead, I told him the harder truth.
"They will if we become afraid of what the truth costs."
