Chapter 2

Ten Minutes

799 words•~4 min read•2026-10-13

Colonel Richard Sterling arrived in eight minutes.

His command vehicle braked beside the checkpoint, and he climbed out before the driver could open his door. He was tall, immaculate, and red-faced from the call that had interrupted his briefing. The anger in his stride vanished when he recognized General Vance.

He saluted. "General. I wasn't informed you had reached the installation."

"That was intentional," Vance replied.

Sterling's eyes moved from his wife to Maya's cheek, then to the two provost-marshal vehicles now blocking the lane. Calculation replaced surprise. Maya watched him assemble a version of events before anyone had told him what happened.

"I'm sure this is a misunderstanding," he said. "Victoria can be forceful, but she supports our soldiers completely."

"She struck one of them."

Sterling turned to Victoria. "Did you?"

Victoria's eyes filled at once. "She humiliated me. She refused access and spoke to me as if I were nobody."

He looked back at Maya. "Specialist Lin, what exactly did you say to my wife?"

The question was not an inquiry. It was a warning disguised by rank.

Maya felt every witness waiting. "I informed Mrs. Sterling that civilian vehicles were prohibited from the secured tarmac, sir."

"And nothing else?"

"Nothing else before she struck me."

Sterling studied her long enough to make the silence uncomfortable. "Young soldiers sometimes misinterpret tone under stress."

General Vance stepped between them. "Colonel, you are not conducting this interview."

Provost Marshal Lieutenant Colonel Helen Ruiz approached with two investigators. Vance ordered the Mercedes impounded, the security recordings preserved, and each witness separated for an individual statement. Victoria protested until Ruiz informed her she was being detained for questioning concerning assault and interference with a controlled military access point.

"Richard!" Victoria cried.

Sterling's jaw flexed, but Vance was watching him. "Cooperate," he told his wife.

As an investigator escorted Victoria away, she twisted toward Maya. The fear in her face had curdled back into hatred.

"This is not over," she said.

Ruiz heard her. "Add attempted intimidation of a witness to the report."

For the first time, Victoria had no answer.

Maya was taken to the clinic. A medic photographed the swelling and confirmed there was no fracture. She wanted to return to duty, but her platoon sergeant ordered her to remain until an investigator arrived.

General Vance came instead.

Without the checkpoint audience, she seemed older and more tired. Brody waited outside the examination room while Vance pulled a metal chair across from Maya.

"How long has Mrs. Sterling behaved this way?" she asked.

Maya hesitated. "I only know what happened today."

"That isn't what I asked."

Maya looked down at her hands. Stories circulated everywhere: soldiers made to carry shopping bags during official events, junior spouses removed from committees, drivers assigned unofficial errands. But rumors were not evidence, and accusing a colonel could end a career even if every word was true.

"People are afraid," she finally said.

Vance nodded as if Maya had confirmed something. "Fear leaves patterns. My staff noticed unusual reassignments, withdrawn complaints, and command-climate surveys that improved too suddenly. That is why my arrival was unannounced."

Maya looked up. "You were already investigating Colonel Sterling?"

"I was inspecting his command. Today gave me a clearer starting point."

Vance leaned forward. "You will be pressured to revise your statement. It may come politely. Someone may tell you that protecting the Army means protecting its reputation. Do not confuse the institution with the people abusing it."

Maya thought of Jackson reaching for her arm.

"What happens to him and Miller?"

"That depends on whether they tell the truth."

After Vance left, Maya found a missed call from her father. She called him back but said only that work had been difficult. He heard the strain anyway.

"Did you do the right thing?" he asked.

"I followed my order."

"That is not what I asked."

Maya closed her eyes. "Yes. I did the right thing."

"Then come home with your name still yours."

That evening, Colonel Sterling sat alone in his office while investigators copied files from his command server. On his desk lay a promotion packet for brigadier general.

Through the glass wall, he could see his staff pretending not to watch him. That morning, they had risen when he entered and waited for him to speak. Now every closed door looked like a private conversation, every lowered voice like the beginning of testimony. Sterling had spent twenty-seven years learning how authority moved through a room. He felt it moving away from him.

Victoria called from the provost marshal's office. He let the phone ring until it stopped. When it began again, he turned the promotion packet facedown.

He opened his private phone and called an old friend at division headquarters.

"I need a problem contained," he said.
