Chapter 7

Boone's Encrypted Drive

806 words•~4 min read•2026-10-13

Boone's encrypted drive changed the review from an inquiry about Holt into an examination of the command that had rewarded him.

Major Chen's team matched voice messages to altered rosters and transfer orders. Five Marines who submitted complaints had been reassigned within six weeks. Three received lower evaluations after leaving Camp Rook, supported by negative memoranda written by Holt and endorsed by Colonel Marr.

Each document looked ordinary on its own.

Together, they formed a system.

Ilona found her own name in it.

Two of the transferred Marines appeared by secure video. Staff Sergeant Nia Bell had reported that Holt withheld winter equipment as punishment. Marr removed her as safety officer for "loss of command confidence," and Ilona's headquarters approved the transfer as routine. Sergeant Jonah Clarke had challenged a false injury report; six days later, he received orders to a recruiting station he had never requested.

Neither had known the other complained.

Chen placed their transfer documents side by side. The justifications used identical language, including the same misplaced comma. Both had moved through Marr's office before reaching expeditionary headquarters.

Ilona recognized the approval chain. Her staff had processed the orders because the packets were complete and the commander's reasons appeared lawful. Holt and Marr had not hidden their retaliation outside the system. They had learned how to make the system carry it for them.

Eleven months earlier, she had approved Marr for the Expeditionary Command Excellence Medal. His nomination cited Camp Rook's equipment readiness, low injury rate, and exceptional personnel retention. All three achievements depended on records now sitting inside Chen's evidence cabinet.

Ilona called Lieutenant General Reed before anyone else could bring it to him.

"I signed the award," she said.

"You signed a recommendation supported by certified reports."

"Reports no one tested."

"Are you suggesting every general personally inventory every heater?"

"I'm suggesting we liked the numbers enough not to question how they stayed perfect."

Reed leaned back on the secure screen. "Put that in your findings."

"It will reflect on this headquarters."

"It should."

The formal interview with Marr began that afternoon. He arrived in dress uniform with two attorneys and a binder twice as thick as the one he had carried on the first day.

Chen asked about the heaters.

"Equipment allocation is a local command decision," Marr replied. "Visitor facilities supported operational briefings with allied partners."

"Were Marines at perimeter posts denied functioning heaters?"

"Temporary shortages occur."

"The inventory reported no shortage."

"Then the equipment existed."

"Inside a locked container."

Marr's attorney objected to the question's tone. Chen rephrased it without changing its meaning.

She moved to Dyer's injury. Marr said he relied on medical and enlisted recommendations. Chen displayed his message ordering Boone to keep the case off the monthly dashboard.

"Raw field noise," she read. "What did you mean?"

"Unverified reporting."

"Dyer was in a hospital."

"His injury did not prevent the unit from completing its mission."

From her seat at the side wall, Ilona watched Marr reduce a Marine's damaged feet to an argument about definitions. His voice never rose. Unlike Holt, he did not need an audience to perform his authority. He had learned to hide the same contempt inside administrative language.

Chen played the recording from Boone's drive.

Holt gets results.

Move anyone who won't cooperate.

Marr waited until the file ended. "A private conversation removed from context."

"Provide the context."

"We were discussing disruptive personnel and operational demands."

"Was Corporal Navarro disruptive?"

"He has admitted to disobedience."

"He contradicted a false statement."

"That is your conclusion."

Chen slid a new document across the table. Holt had submitted it that morning through his attorney. In the statement, he claimed Marr personally authorized extended ridge assignments, suppressed the Dyer report, and approved the attempt to discredit Navarro.

For the first time, Marr stopped looking at Chen.

He read the first page, then the second. A pulse moved beside his temple.

"Holt is protecting himself."

"That may be true," Chen said. "Is his statement false?"

Marr requested a recess.

After he left, Ilona remained in the interview room with the empty chair and recording lights. She had chosen Marr for the assignment two years earlier. His briefings were precise, his units met deadlines, and his problems arrived already solved. She had mistaken the absence of visible friction for leadership.

Chen began gathering her files. "You're not responsible for every choice he made."

"No." Ilona remembered pinning the command award above Marr's pocket. "I'm responsible for what I rewarded."

The reviewing authority scheduled a command climate hearing for the following week. Holt and Marr would appear as subjects. Navarro, Boone, Dyer, Rusk, and twelve additional Marines were listed as witnesses.

Ilona's name appeared among them.

This time, she would enter the room with her rank visible.

It would not make her account worth more than anyone else's.
