Chapter 6

The Pink Coat

795 words•~4 min read•2026-10-13

Rachel did not bring Lucy to the police station. Too many cameras waited outside, and the kennel carried the constant noise of barking dogs. Sergeant Harper arranged a private meeting at the department training field on a quiet Tuesday afternoon.

Atlas and I arrived first. I walked him around the fenced grass twice, then placed him in a down beside a wooden bench. He wore an ordinary collar instead of his tactical channel. I wanted Lucy to see a dog, not the dark shape that had crossed the park toward her.

Rachel's car stopped outside the gate. Lucy remained in the back seat.

Five minutes passed before the door opened. She stepped out wearing the same pink coat, now washed clean except for a pale grass stain near one pocket. Her left wrist was wrapped in a soft brace. She held the yellow frisbee against her chest.

Atlas noticed her. His ears lifted, and his tail touched the grass once.

"Stay," I told him.

Lucy heard the command from beyond the fence. She watched Atlas remain exactly where he was.

Rachel crouched beside her. They spoke too quietly for me to hear. Lucy shook her head. Rachel did not pull her toward us. She sat on the ground and waited.

Eventually Lucy came to the gate.

"Will he run?" she asked.

"Not unless I release him."

"You told him to stop before."

There was no gentle answer that was also true. "I did. He heard a danger I couldn't hear yet. He made a choice to reach you first."

Lucy looked down at the brace. "It hurt."

"I know. I'm sorry you were hurt."

I did not tell her that a bruise was better than venom. She was seven. She was allowed to remember the pain without being corrected by an adult's calculation.

Harper opened the gate but stayed beside it. Lucy entered with Rachel's hand around hers. Atlas watched them approach. When Lucy stopped, he lowered his chin to the grass.

"Why is he doing that?" she asked.

"He's making himself smaller."

"Does he know I'm scared?"

"Probably. He pays attention to people."

She studied him for a long time. "I remember his teeth."

"He was showing them to the snake. But you couldn't see where he was looking."

Lucy moved one step closer. Atlas stayed down. She moved another. The frisbee slipped against her coat, and his eyes followed it before returning to me.

That made her smile for the first time.

"He wants this."

"Very much."

Lucy placed the frisbee on the grass halfway between them. Atlas did not move.

"Can I tell him?"

I showed her the flat palm signal and told her to use a steady voice. Lucy raised one small hand.

"Atlas, stay."

His body remained still, but his tail swept the grass again.

She crossed the remaining distance. Rachel drew a quick breath behind her, then held it. Lucy stopped beside Atlas's shoulder, close to the place that had struck her in the park. Her fingers hovered above his coat.

Atlas turned his head away. He gave her the choice.

Lucy touched him.

At first she used only two fingers. Then her hand settled against the warm fur along his neck. Atlas exhaled and leaned no more than an inch toward her.

"He feels different when he's not running," she said.

"Everything does."

Lucy rubbed the place on her coat where Atlas had struck her. "Was he mad at me?"

"No. He needed you away from the leaves, and he had almost no time."

"He could have barked."

"He did growl. None of us understood him."

She considered that, then looked at Atlas. "So he used the loudest thing he had."

It was a better explanation than any I had given the review board investigators.

She sat beside him. For several minutes she asked questions. Did Atlas sleep in my house? Did he dream? Was he afraid of snakes? I answered what I could and admitted what I could not know. Rachel joined us on the grass, keeping one hand against Lucy's back.

When it was time to leave, Lucy picked up the frisbee. "Can he have it after the hearing?"

"You should keep it."

"I don't want to keep being scared of it."

She held it out. Atlas looked at the frisbee, then at me. I told him to take it. He closed his teeth gently around the edge and carried it to the bench.

Rachel wiped her cheek with the back of her hand. "The review board asked me to speak," she said. "I told them I would."

I nodded, unable to trust my voice.

At the gate, Lucy turned around. "Officer Cole?"

"Yes?"

"Tell them Atlas scared me."

My stomach tightened.

"Then tell them why."
