Chapter 1

Scalding Coffee

790 words•~4 min read•2026-10-13

The liquid struck Specialist Mara Reyes across the chest. Heat punched through her uniform almost at once, pressing the soaked fabric against her skin.

Every instinct told her to step back, tear open her jacket, drop to the floor—anything to escape the pain.

Mara stayed where she was.

She planted her boots on the polished floor of Fort Ellery's assembly hall and locked her jaw until she tasted blood. Her knees shook, but she refused to let them buckle.

The hall had fallen silent.

Fifty soldiers watched from three ranks beneath the faded campaign flags. Not one of them spoke. General Edwin Vale stood directly in front of Mara, the empty metal bucket hanging loosely from one hand. His face was flushed, and his breathing sounded unnaturally loud in the stillness. He wore the satisfaction of a man who expected the room to mistake cruelty for command.

"Your parents must be proud," he said, pitching his voice toward the back wall.

Mara's hands began to tremble.

Not from fear.

She pressed her fingers straight before they could curl into fists.

Vale paced in front of her. Ten minutes earlier, he had ordered Mara to explain why she had refused to revise a training incident report. She had told him the report was accurate. Private Lucas Bennett had collapsed during a field exercise after the unit continued training under dangerous heat conditions. The medic's notes said heat exhaustion. The operations log showed that Vale had personally ordered the exercise to continue.

Vale wanted both facts removed.

Mara had refused.

Now her report lay on a table beside him, its pages spotted with the same steaming water that ran down her uniform.

"If your parents were standing here," Vale said, "they'd turn their backs on you." He stopped within arm's reach. "No parent would want to claim a disgrace in uniform."

A soldier shifted behind Mara. The squeak of a rubber sole cut across the silence. Someone else lowered his eyes.

The movement passed through the room like a protest no one dared voice, then disappeared. No one had ever challenged Vale when he behaved this way. No one chose that moment to be the first.

Vale laughed. The sound was sharp and deliberate, meant to invite the others to join him.

No one did.

"Go on, Specialist," he said. "Call them. Let them see what they raised."

He turned slightly toward the watching soldiers, presenting Mara's humiliation as if it were part of the day's training. The confidence in his smile made his assumption clear: she had no one who would answer, much less stand behind her.

He was wrong.

Mara slipped one hand into her cargo pocket. The movement dragged wet fabric across her skin, sending another wave of pain through her chest. She kept her expression still.

Her phone came out slick with droplets. She wiped the screen against her palm, unlocked it, and selected a contact.

Vale watched with open amusement. "Oh, this should be interesting."

Mara raised the phone to her ear. The line connected.

"Dad," she said.

Her fingers still shook. Her voice did not.

"The general wants to see you."

The answer lasted only a few seconds.

"Where are you?" her father asked.

"North assembly hall."

"I'm coming."

Mara ended the call and lowered the phone.

Vale placed the bucket on the table with a hollow clang. "Was he impressed?"

She said nothing.

For five minutes, no one moved. The water soaking Mara's uniform began to cool, but the sting beneath it remained. Vale paced once, then checked the clock above the doors. By the second minute, his smirk had stiffened. By the fourth, two officers at the side of the room were exchanging uneasy glances.

Around Mara, the silence changed.

It was no longer stunned.

It was waiting.

The double doors at the far end of the hall burst inward with a crash that rolled off the walls.

Every head turned.

Three officers entered. The woman on the left carried a locked evidence case. The colonel on the right held a folder marked ARMY READINESS REVIEW. Between them walked a tall man in a service uniform bearing three stars on each shoulder.

Lieutenant General Gabriel Reyes stopped just inside the doorway.

His eyes found Mara first—the soaked uniform, the flushed skin above her collar, the phone still in her hand. Then he noticed the bucket and the damp report on the table.

Something tightened in his face, but his voice remained level.

"General Vale," he said. "You wanted to see me."

Vale stared at the three stars. Then he looked at Mara.

For the first time since lifting the bucket, he seemed to understand that the room was no longer his.

His smile vanished.
