Chapter 1

The Whispering Rust

1650 words•~9 min read•2026-03-01

The rain that fell upon the Iron Valley tasted of zinc and forgotten oaths. Raindrops beat a relentless rhythm against the jagged slate roofs of the lower district, where smoke from copper smelters mingled with the smell of cheap spiced wine.

Kael leaned against the decaying post of the bell tower, his breath misting in the cold dusk. Beneath his worn traveling cloak, his fingers brushed against the hilt wrapped in boiled leather. It was not a weapon of glory—it bore scratches from a hundred petty skirmishes and notches from blades long turned to dust.

"You have been standing there for three chimes, wanderer," a rasping voice cut through the downpour. Old Man Vane peered through the shutters of his apothecary, eyes milky with cataracts yet sharp as surgical obsidian.

"The wind carries scent from the Northern Ridge," Kael replied softly, not shifting his gaze from the fog-draped pass. "The White Crane Sect is hunting again."

Vane let out a wheezing chuckle that ended in a cough. "They do not hunt men here, boy. They hunt relics. Ever since the Sky Vault cracked last winter, every disciple with two coins to rub together thinks he can dig up divinity from the mud."

"This time is different," Kael murmured. He unclasped his scabbard, revealing the jagged fracture running down the center of the dark iron blade. As the ambient mist touched the crack, faint azure glyphs flared to life beneath the rust—pulsing in synchrony with his own heartbeat.

For seven centuries, the Void Blade had remained silent. But tonight, it was humming a melody of war.

Down in the valley below, a cluster of crimson paper lanterns swayed through the gloom. Torches flared to life one after another along the mountain switchbacks. The hunt had begun, and the silence of the valley was about to bleed.
